On my nightstand:
Swamplandia! by Karen Russell
The story of the Bigtree Family, alligator wrestlers and would-be Indians. They remain indomitable in the face of the death of Hilola Bigtree (their star attraction), the loss of the tourists they depend on to keep themselves afloat, a love affair with a ghost, the Bird Man, and other catastrophies large and small. Russell is an astonishingly gifted writer; I laughed out loud several times in sheer delight at the linguistic gifts on hand. Highly recommended.
Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor
This was my favorite book of last year, sequel to my favorite book of 2010, Daughter of Smoke and Bone. An entirely satisfying continuation of the story of Karou and Akiva as they return to what remains of their respective families in Eretz. I loved this so much I’m reading it again.
A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin
I’ve been reading each book at the conclusion of that season. Even though the HBO series has started departing significantly from the books, I don’t want any spoilers to mar my appreciation of the show. I am loving the books and getting to spend more time with my favorite characters – Arya, Tyrion, Bran and Daenerys.
